About Pole Dancing

"Dance isn't a form, it's a way of life!"

Pole Play is a dance school which views fitness through the eyes of the latest generation of women. It takes the old opinion of fitness and turns it on its head by introducing dance as a form of exercise to increase self-confidence and improve fitness levels but in a more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere than normal group fitness classes.

Pole Play was founded by Josephine in 2005 and she founded
The Pole Divas Championships in the summer of 2006!

Both she and her supporting instructors Catherine, Lovita and Tabby have taken on board comments from students leading to improved classes over the years. This has led to a unique blend of teaching methods, class structure, observation and administration that is aimed to make dance fitness accessible to as many people as possible whilst keeping the personal contact usually missing from a large-scale company.

Having appeared on ITV's Upstaged and featured through Channel 4, TV3's Xposé, Scarlet Magazine, Women's Fitness Magazine, Edirectories and Vue we decided to introduce the world of pole dance to the nation through the launch of The Pole Divas Championships which began in 2006 in Grimsby of all places and now covers the entire UK and Republic of Ireland!

Why Dance?

Dancing forces the use of body, mind and most essentially, spirit. It includes the 3 main components of a fitness program; flexibility, resistance training and aerobic activity. Dance can be enjoyed simply for the pleasure of taking part and escaping the real world or for the more physical benefits it brings as part of a fitness regime.

These few quotes below sum up my love of dance:

"Dance isn't a form, it's a way of life."

"We dance for laughter, we dance for tears, we dance for madness, we dance for fears, we dance for hopes, we dance for screams, we are the dancers, we create the dreams."

"Imagination is more important than knowledge" ~ Albert Einstein

"Kids: they dance before they learn there is anything that isn't music." ~ William Stafford

"Anyone who says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in the rain."

"If dancing were any easier it would be called football."

"Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but she did it backwards and in high heels."

"A child sings before it speaks, dances almost before it walks. Music is in our hearts from the beginning." ~ Pamela Brown

And finally an old yet well-known lesson to live by:

"Work like you don't need money,
Love like you've never been hurt,
And dance like no one's watching."

Aren't dance classes only for children and ballet dancers??

The Pole Dance classes are attended by a wide variety of students. The age range in our current classes is from 16 to 60 with the average student being in their mid to late 20's. They come from all walks of life; professionals, students, mothers, daughters... they all want to workout in a supportive environment which aims to raise their confidence as well as increase their fitness. Anyone is welcome to join in the lessons, big or small, old or young it makes no difference and as I've learnt from experience, attraction and sexiness are not based on looks alone.

We started the classes in 2005 with just 4 people doing 4 week courses on 1 pole in the function room of a tiny nightclub! Our students provided feedback from their courses and we now have continuous classes, more poles and more variety. We cover everything from tricks to performance and paying for the classes is now easier than ever with special offers, loyalty cards and payments online or by bank transfer as well as by old fashioned cash and cheques!

We can take much larger groups in our Pole Parties at the Bierkeller venue due to the more entertainment based aspect of the lesson. As a previous student I understand the importance of one-on-one tuition and the school also offers private lessons to perfect your new found skills!
